Panel 1 [View of both men on either side of the agent’s desk. Hanshaw is opening his manifest book and reaching for a pen. Lawrence is looking on with a bit of anxiety.]
HANSHAW:
Understand you the details of the flyer?
LAWRENCE:
I believe so.
HANSHAW:
Your name?
LAWRENCE:
Lawrence Manner.
HANSHAW:
Age?
LAWRENCE:
Twenty-six.
Panel 2 [Close shot of Hanshaw starting to write in his book.]
HANSHAW:
Right, Mr. Manner, you get your $75 just before putting to sea. We’ll mark you down for the 1/180th lay on whatever the Valor brings back, to be paid out ‘pon her return.
Panel 3 [Hanshaw looking bored as he starts to write down Lawrence’s information]
HANSHAW:
Come back on here 10th of November to procure your outfit and sign the articles. The Valor departs that same morn, half past five. Don’t miss it. Pleasure doing business.
Panel 4 [Lawrence stepping back slightly, looking a bit suspicious/surprised]
LAWRENCE:
That’s it then?
Panel 5 [Hanshaw smiles wryly.]
HANSHAW:
Remarkable, ain't it? All the wealth and glories of whaling right here to be took, for those men brave ‘nough to take it.
That’s it then.

Well that was certainly much less complicated than Ishmael led me to believe it would be 😂
Haha, compared to other maritime trades whalers were very easy to get into. They needed a lot of hands and no beginning experience, so about 50% of all the crews of a voyage leaving out of New Bedford in the heyday were entirely green lads.
