Panel 1 [Adelaide looks over at the journal that Lawrence is splaying open with his hand—he’s looking down as well, as if surprised to see her attention on it]
ADELAIDE:
Are you an artist, Mr. Manner?
LAWRENCE:
Oh—I—hardly.
Panel 2 [Lawrence glances up thoughtfully, pencil in hand]
LAWRENCE:
I heard, when not sighting whales, that these voyages could be quite tedious. I brought this to amuse myself.
Panel 3[Adelaide is laughing, pointing at the drawing. Lawrence laughing slightly too.]
ADELAIDE:
Well, you captured the likeness of my husband rather well, as tiny as he may be. I can certainly tell one beard from the other, here.
LAWRENCE:
Hah. Thank you.
Panel 4 [Low angle of Adelaide looking out over the water as she stands beside Lawrence, her hands on the railing]
ADELAIDE:
I’ve artists in my family--my father was a poet…though, not a successful one. We all had to be more practical. But he tried to instill the practice in his daughters. I was hoping I’d be able to pull some verse from the waves but right now I only see blue.
