Panel 1 [Ezra looks at Lawrence with a firm sincerity]
EZRA:
And that moment should tell you it’s good this ship has you. If it didn’t—
Well. I figure cuttin’ into a man must be different from cuttin’ into a whale. But the agents don’t think so. It’s all the same blood to ‘em.
Panel 2 [Lawrence stands, looking over his shoulder at Ezra who's nodding his head out the door with his arms crossed.]
EZRA:
Mathews is roarin’ mad at sharin’ a cabin with me now. Mr. Allen is prolly havin’ a bit more grace, even though he’s gotta bunk with the idlers.
LAWRENCE:
Will Mathews give you trouble?
EZRA:
If he does I can handle him.
Panel 4 [Ezra takes Lawrence's shoulder, looking at him with that same firm earnestness. Lawrence looks off to the side, seeming like he’s trying to convince himself that Ezra is being truthful.]
EZRA:
That was important work with Jackson. Even if you didn’t wanna do it, or didn’t want anyone to know you could do it. It’s important that you did it.
LAWRENCE:
I know…I know…
Panel 5 [Ezra leans his head to the side inquisitively as Lawrence turns away, pulling one hand through his hair and looking a little stressed]
EZRA:
You alright?
LAWRENCE:
I will be, once I ground myself in this sort of work again. I just didn’t expect…I didn’t think I’d be back here.

I’m actually glad for the sake of the crew that he both knows what he’s doing and he doesn’t *want* to be The Doctor. Being a doctor is hard, and I imagine it’s especially hard in this era! So someone who decides to be a doctor even though it’s hard is either incredibly strong and stubborn, which doesn’t last long, or wants to be a doctor for reasons besides helping people. Poor man though…

He sooo wanted to get out of this haha
