Panel 1 [Barzillai eyes Lawrence suspiciously as they walk away from the focsle]
BARZILLAI:
I won’t pry into why you thought playing greenhand was somehow a better alternative than being a physician ashore.
Panel 2 [Shot of the two men’s backs as they walk towards the officers' cabins]
BARZILLAI:
But I won’t tolerate a skilled hand on this ship not doing what it’s meant to.
Panel 3 [Close up of Lawrence looking with a somewhat sad, weary expression as Barzillai's voice comes off camera]
BARZILLAI:
You will be promoted to physician. Your lay will be a physician’s.
Panel 4 [The two men stop outside the 1st mate’s private cabin. Barzillai is gesturing to it with a firm expression, Lawrence inclining his head submissively]
BARZILLAI:
Mathew’s cabin will be yours to make use of now, as resident doctor. Is that clear?
LAWRENCE:
Yes, Captain.

No opt-out clause in that medical plan.

I wish I knew of more people reading this. The combination of vivid, distinct characters, beautifully paced story telling, terrific and sometimes subtle artwork, with detailed historical information and a palpable sense of its era, is like nothing else I’ve read. Please know that you have at least one truly loyal fan here. I hope you can continue to tell this story through its conclusion.

Thanks very much for reading and for such kind words! The script has been fully finished for years so I’ll absolutely see it through–now it’s just the years of drawing haha. Tell your friends! Rope ’em in!

Maybe list it on ComicFury ?
I can’t even remember where I saw this the first time but I’m pretty sure it was a link on one I found there.

I’ve caught up, now – I can’t wait to see where else this story takes us. Your art is so beautiful; I haven’t read a webcomic in years, but I wouldn’t pass this one up for the world. I love the characters and environment that’s been so swiftly and deeply developed, and I could probably look at every single panel for hours and still not catch everything there is to love about it. Fantastic work!!!!

Thank you so much for reading, and for taking the time to share your thoughts with me! I’m glad you’re enjoying this one so far!

Somehow I don’t see Mr. Mathew as being the kind who’d step down from a cabin he sees as his very readily, or without a fight.
Hopefully he won’t be needing the good Dr’s services anytime soon.

just caught up. I’m excited for future updates – why DID Lawrence think being a greenhand whaler was preferable to being a doctor on shore? Honestly I’ve been more invested in Ezra until now, and into the relationship of the captain and his wife and the dynamics with her being aboard, but now I am also eager to learn more about the mysterious background of *Dr.* Manner
Silas
At the very least, he considered it his ‘substitute for pistol and ball’!
Oldarmourer
Is that ‘pistols at dawn’, ‘pistols in the dead of night’, or ‘pistol as a painkiller’ ? 😉
Silas
A moby dick reference that leans towards the latter.
Oldarmourer
Mmhmm but it never hurts to have options to keep your audience on their toes 😉

So glad I bookmarked this comic. Do you have a tumblr post ‘advertising’ this? I would reblog it in a heartbeat, it’s such a good story, AMAZING ART, WITH ESSAYS ah!
Anyway, as a landlubbing New Englander I love learning more about this profession that shaped this region’s character.

Eyy, thank you so much for reading! I’m glad you’re enjoying it so far.
And there is a tumblr post, if that suits your fancy! It’s here.
